Former courtyard transformed into fantastic atrium cafe

Appearance of the 1960s award-winning design maintained

Bristol Water HQ | Bedminster Down, Bristol

Client: Bristol Water Plc Value: £7.5m

Refurbishment of and extension to the iconic Bristol Water Headquarters in Bristol. gcp’s design radically transformed the working environment of this iconic 1960s headquarters building into a bright, modern, and energy-efficient office environment.

The phased project consisted of an insulated over-clad of the structure, an extension wing at first and second floor levels straddling an existing car park, and a complete internal refurbishment. The refurbishment included the transformation of the unattractive central courtyard into a spacious and bright atrium café.

The phased approach and meticulous planning enabled the works to be carried out with the building in occupation and without the need for temporary accommodation. The scheme upgraded the premises to an EPC B rating.

Phase 4 to provide an additional extension for the operations room and for a new roof garden is at feasibility stage.

We have changed the way we work and are more flexible in how we use our space, much tidier than we used to be and the building seems to have gained the respect of our people as somewhere to enjoy working.
